Unfortunately, Mathster had some server problems over the weekend and only informed me of this on Monday morning. The website should now be accessible to students to complete their homework for Wednesday.

Apologies for any inconvenience.

Student Interview to Parents

Thank you to the parents who have signed up to be interviewed by the students.

If possible, Wednesday at 9:30 would be a perfect time. If you are able to make this could you please email me with your confirmation of attendance.

Many thanks!

Current Affairs

It is important that children are aware of news issues from around the world. The class have had many discussion this year about the news and students have offered their opinion on a variety of topics. To help students better understand topics I would recommend that they watch Newsround. This provides them with news articles in a sensitive and child-friendly way.

Tuesday 10 November 2015

Parents - we need you!

This half term, in English, 5L will be studying biographies and autobiographies.

As part of this topic the students would like to interview a variety of parents.

We would like the interviews to take place Thursday 26th of November between 9am and 10:45am.

It would be great if parents could be interviewed at the same time however I know this may not be feesable therefore if you are interested in this activity, but would like to arrange an alternative time to be interviewed, please send me an email of interest and outline the day/time that would suit you best.

If you would feel more comfortable being interviewed in Portuguese, that would not be a problem.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Mathematics in Action!

Next week, as part of our Measure topic in Mathematics, 5L will turn themselves into chef's and bake fairy cakes. The students will be asked to work in groups to make the fairy cakes using ingredients and following a recipe. We will be doing this activity Period 1 - 3 on Wednesday morning. The students were split into groups today and will be required to bring items to school to make this activity possible. It is aimed to give the students an opportunity to work as part of a group and use Mathematics in a real life context.

If you would not like your student to be involved in this activity, please contact me directly via email.

Many thanks.

International Day of the Girl

As mentioned previously, as part of our Humanities studies, 5L are concentrating on Global Goal number 5: Gender Equality. As part of this topic the class will be learning about the disadvantages girls/women face around the world and how we can make steps to change this.

In 2011, a United Nations resolution established 11 October as the International Day of the Girl Child a day designated for promoting the rights of girls and addressing the unique challenges they face. As the lead agency for the Day, UNICEF selected this year's theme, “The Power of the Adolescent Girl: Vision for 2030”.

It is hoped that we celebrate this day in class. I have asked every student to talk to their parents about this topic and how we can celebrate the day in class next Monday.

Many thanks.

Form 5 Geography Field Trip to River Douro

We have organised a Geography field trip to Cais da Gaia, Afurada and the Douro Estuary nature reserve on Tuesday 13th October 2015. The trip includes a river cruise.

The trip is linked to work the children are doing on rivers in Geography.

We will leave school at 9:00am and return to school by 4:10pm.

Pupils should wear their school uniform. They should bring a packed lunch, snack and water as well as a hat and sun cream.

They may bring a maximum of €5 for an ice-cream.

Please note that in the event of poor weather, the trip will be postponed or the walking component of the trip will be cancelled.

Wednesday 30 September 2015

Class Dojo

We are now using ClassDojo to record House Points. This application enables teachers to give house points for positive behaviour/attitude and also take away house points for negative behaviour/attitude. You will be able to track your child's progress via the website. Everyone has received a username and password for student access and parental access.

I hope to see everyone receive as many positive points as possible!

Accelerated Reader

Each student received a username and password to give to their parents/carers for Accelerated Reader. This information will enable you to access information on quizzes your child has completed on English books they have read. Last week, each student sat the Accelerated Reader test and received feedback from myself on the level appropriate for their reading ability. This information can be found in the inside of their yellow reading record book. If you have any questions regarding the books that your child is reading then please contact me.

I would ask that each student reads every night and selects a variety of different authors and genre's from the library as this will provide them with a better understanding of vocabulary and text structure.

Students, remember to ask myself, or Mrs Wilson (who is an expert!) on books that may interest you. There is no point reading a book that you do not enjoy.

Homework

A note to all students

At the beginning of the academic year, you were told set days of when homework for English and Mathematics would be given. The timetable for Homework is also available on the blog for reference. It was also explained that Science homework would be given but no set days would be provided as this would change depending on the topic or the amount of work covered within class time.

Unfortunately, I have been disappointed with the standard of homework submitted so far from 5L. Many of you are choosing not to complete homework or you are not completing it to the standard I believe you are capable. Instead, you are rushing through it and making careless errors.

Homework provides opportunities for reinforcement of work learned during school time and for you to develop research skills. You may need to seek information from reference materials such as the internet, books, etc. and by doing so, are helped along the path to becoming independent learners.

Having the responsibility of needing to meet deadlines promotes self-discipline, an attribute which will impact on school work and beyond.

If you are finding a piece of homework difficult then I do not mind answering questions; as long as those questions are before the day that the homework is due. Can I ask that everyone, from this point onwards, completes homework on time and to the best of their ability.

Form 5 Science Talk

As part of our Science topic on 'Organs of the Body, tomorrow, Ms Anabela Mesquitac will be presenting a question and answer session with Form 5. Each class will have the opportunity to ask questions to further their learning. Could I ask that each student thinks of 2 very good questions about the heart for tomorrow. This will help us structure the lesson and not waste time thinking of questions on the day. Students should write the questions in their homework book.

Many thanks.

Global Goals

On September 25th 2015, 193 world leaders committed to the Global Goals for Sustainable Development. 17 goals to achieve 3 extraordinary things in the next 15 years. End extreme poverty. Fight inequality and injustice. Fix climate change. If every school in the world teaches children about these goals, we will help them become the generation that changed the world

In Primary, each class is concentrating on a Global Goal. The children in our care today can change the future.

In 5L, we will be concentrating on Gender Equality.

'If all girls and boys learn about gender equality, we can expect a more gender-sensitized world which will reduce crimes against women and girls and help grow respect for every human alive. And then, we can have that truly prosperous world that we dream of having'.

If any parent has a strong knowledge of this subject or feels passionate about the topic and would like to come in to class to discuss this issue with the students then please contact me. We will be studying this topic for the next three weeks.

Many thanks.

Tuesday Trip

Tomorrow, Form 5 will be carrying out research in a local area walking trip to conduct some geography field work. We will be using the River Douro as a case study for current Humanities topic ‘Rivers’.

There is no cost to parents for this trip. As it is a local area walking trip parental permission has already been granted.
We will leave school at 1.40pm and return before 4:10pm. Full school uniform is required.

The trip will be postponed in the event of wet weather.

Well done to all students who had the confidence to speak at the assembly on Monday and try out for the positions.

Follow the blog!

Thank you to Mr Charles who provided me with an ICT lesson on blogging! You can now follow the class blog by receiving emails when a new post appears on the main home page. This may save you time logging on to the blog and will provide up to date notifications. At the right hand side of this page it should allow you to enter your email address, a verification code should be entered and then a confirmation email will be sent to your inbox. Thanks for taking the time to visit the blog!

This week we are learning...

This page on the blog enables parents to understand what their child is learning each week in school. It could provide a conversation starter with them to find out what they have learnt each day. I hope you find it useful.

Photographs Update

Further to the email sent to all parents, the class and individual photographs will now be taken on Thursday and Friday of this week. When I receive the day and time I will update to the blog.

Thanks.

Baksetball and Football Teams

Today is the start of the after school clubs. Many students in 5L have signed up for either Girls Football or Boys Basketball. At Basketball practice today Mrs Costello and I will be stating that not everyone will be selected to represent the school at the Lisbon Tournaments. Due to the amount of students who have signed up to the club (20 with others on the waiting list) it would be impossible for us to accomodate all students. The final team selected will be the students that we think can be competitive and have performed to the best of their abiliy, not only at basketball club but throughout all aspects of school life. It is inevitable that some children will be disappointed but we hope that clarifying the expectations at the beginning enables students to understand that they may be disappointed when the squads are announced.

Thank you for your support.

House Captain and Vice Captain

I would ask that any student who wishes to try out for Captain or Vice-Captain lets me know tomorrow. If anyone requires any support on what to say during the assembly please feel free to speak to me between now and Friday.

Class and individual photographs

Tomorrow, 5L will have to smile for the camera as we are getting our photograph taken. This is scheduled for Period 9. Please could students wear full school uniform and leave any accessories (bracelets, necklaces, etc) at home.

Thank you!

Form 5 Trip

Please could I ask that all students bring the permission slip for the Form 5 trip to school tomorrow.

Information has been sent via email but any last minute questions can be asked at the Parent Information Evening tomorrow.

Thank you.

Welcome!

I would like to welcome everyone to the Form 5L blog for academic year 2015/2016.

It has been a great first day getting to know the students and I hope they have all enjoyed the start to Form 5.
